Yvonne Barnes

The new head at St Mary’s School

The Chipping Norton News asked Yvonne to send a pen picture of herself for readers. Here’s Yvonne’s response:

A warm hello to all residents of Chipping Norton. For those of you who don’t know me well, my name is Yvonne Barnes and I am the new Headteacher at St Mary’s CE (A) primary school, having been appointed in October.

I was born in Lincolnshire and even as a small child dreamed of becoming a teacher. At the age of eighteen, in order to fulfil that dream, I began studying at Leicester polytechnic and graduated with a BEd honours degree in 1986.

My teaching career got off to a challenging but exciting start when I started my first teaching position as a Reception teacher in East London. Subsequently I have taught in schools within Oxfordshire for the last thirteen years and have taught all age groups during that time. I joined the St Mary’s team as a Deputy Headteacher in 1998 and I am now proud to be leading such a dedicated and hardworking staff and to be working alongside a supportive Governing body.

St Mary’s is a school that has always concentrated on developing the whole child. In practice this means that all who visit us will see a school where each child is encouraged to develop their full potential, academically socially and spiritually. My aim is that children leave us with the skills to become effective citizens of the future and that they remember their primary school days fondly as a time when they progressed well within an exciting and stimulating environment.

I am keen to continue to encourage the open door policy for our parents so that they feel welcomed in to our school to discuss their child’s progress. Above all, I wish to work further on the pupil, teacher, parent partnership that is so vital for the success of each and every one of our pupils.

Links with the local community and churches are vital to our school. We have a strong Friends’ Aassociation who would always welcome support from local businesses. Through our close and regular liaison with the Chipping Norton News, we can let the community know what St Mary’s stands for.

If you are a resident or business holder in the town and wish to know more about us please don’t hesitate to contact us for a tour of the building and to see the children and staff at work. I am looking forward to an exciting future for St Mary’s and am keen to build upon its many strengths with the support of our children, parents and the wider community of Chipping Norton. If you are interested in sending your child to St Mary’s and he or she is of pre-school age please make sure that you fill out an application form early so that we are able to plan ahead and secure your child’s place
