ORGANISATIONS IN CHIPPY |
The Vintage Sports-Car Club
The
VSCC is primarily concerned with the preservation and competition of
sports cars built pre-1931, and selected Post Vintage
Thoroughbreds (PVT) sports cars built prior to 1941. We are a large
and growing Club who organise more than thirty competitive events every
year. The current membership is over 7,500 members worldwide. The Vintage
Sports Car Club was founded in 1934 by a group of young men following a
proposition in the now defunct magazine “The Light Car” that a ‘club for
the not so rich’ be formed. The main concern was that the heyday of
historic motoring was coming to an end. The original ethos still stands in
that the VSCC is about actively enjoying our motoring heritage.
The
membership spans a wide variety of people from all walks of life, and is
currently topping an all time high of 7,500 members. The movement has a
strong population of young, female and overseas members. The entire
membership is extremely social which contributes to an atmosphere where an
interest in the cars supersedes any concern for personal wealth or status.
When the VSCC was formed in 1934 its founding members felt that the
adoption of mass production was signaling the end of proper ‘vintage’ car
building. They set a cut-off date of 193I. Today
you will see many fine vintage cars at all of our meetings. You will also
see a lot of post-vintage thoroughbreds - cars built between 1931 and 1940
but adhering
to earlier standards - plus the best post-war cars such as the Grand Prix
and sports racing cars of the I950s. Imagine
anything from Edwardian racing cars through Bentleys, Bugattis, Frazer
Nashes, Morgans (mostly three-wheeled), Rileys to Alfa Romeos,
Cooper-Bristol 5, ERAs, D-type Jaguars and Maseratis. Every one with a
story to tell and every one raced for real. VSCC
Events range from anything from a ‘noggin and natter’ at a pub to the
world’s best historic racing. Along the way the programme includes
reliability trials, road rallies (with provision for all levels of
navigational skill), driving tests, sprints, speed hill climbs and a host
of social occasions.
Examples of all of these events can be found in virtually all areas
of the country. The Club’s ethos has always been one of friendly
competition and nowadays all events are held under the auspices of The
Motor Sports Association. Particular emphasis is placed on encouraging
younger drivers, with special awards for under-23s.
