THE POWER OF SNOW
by Rosie Barker age 13
who lives in The Leys
 Adolescent
population make a stand for what they believe in - playing in the snow!
On the 29th January, Chipping Norton was covered in a sheet
of snow. There was a blizzard on Wednesday, and on Thursday the schools in
Chipping Norton were closed for the day. Many people were complaining that
the roads weren’t being gritted fast enough, but down the Leys they were
too quick. People stuck on the roads said that there had to be some sort
of emergency plan. But residents of the Leys had formed their own plan. The
Leys is a very steep hill, and was covered in
snow
and ice so that none of the cars risked moving because of the risks of
crashing. Most of the adolescent population came out to sledge down the
hill, and reached great speeds, occasionally taking down unaware viewers
and crashing into trees and cars. There were the usual plastic sledges,
but also wooden sleighs, and towards the end of the morning, tea trays and
planks of wood. Snowballs were flying through the air, missing their
targets by great lengths. People came form all ends of Chippy, and even
some from outside of it. All ages took part, from toddlers, to some
entering their 40’s. At about 11:30, the gritter came to grit the road, to
many people’s dismay. Instead of letting it ruin the fun, many people sat
on their sledges in the middle of the road, forming a clumsy protest and
refusing to move.
Their
plan worked and the gritter moved away to other parts of Chipping Norton.
This was a victory for the sledgers, but not for the OAPs, slipping down
the hill in their Nissan Micras, trying dutifully not to run over small
bodies. By lunchtime, most of the sledgers had gone in, and the gritter
proceeded with what it was sent to do, if a few hours late. So, a day of
schoolwork was sacrificed to have fun. Just as well, because it might not
happen again for another few years, if global warming increases. |
